AMP Member Verna Gates
Receives National
Communicator of Achievement Award

September 14, 2009 — Verna Gates, a published author, journalist, and founder of a state-wide non-profit, has been named runner-up in the national 2009 Communicator of Achievement competition by the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW). The award was presented during their national conference in San Antonio this past weekend.

The top award went to nationally syndicated columnist Heloise. Gates says, “An honor from your peers makes all of the stresses of unwilling interviewees and tight deadlines worthwhile."

After being selected by Alabama Media Professionals (an NFPW affiliate) as this state’s Communicator of Achievement earlier this summer, Gates became one of the 15 national finalists. The award is given to a member based on professional achievement, community service, and service to Alabama Media Professionals and the NFPW.

Gates’ career began as one of the original 50 employees of CNN, where she worked as a writer and producer for four years. A freelance journalist for 26 years, Gates is a regular contributor to TIME magazine and London-based Reuters International Wire Service. Her office walls are filled with writing awards, including many from NFPW.

Gates also serves as the founder and executive director of Fresh Air Family, a non-profit organization dedicated to outdoor education. She started FAF in 2006 and in only three years, Gates has grown its membership to more than 10,000 and recently received a $750,000 grant from the U. S. Department of Education.

An Alabama Media Professionals member for more than a decade, Gates has recruited many members including three of the past five presidents.
